Smith & Walser's "Ultimate Bait Fish" Click on photo to enlarge

This is the go to pattern in our collection of bass and saltwater flies. It is tied primarily of Ram's Wool and has an action in the water like nothing else out there. The head is separated by lead eyes and is cut busy so it pushes the water. It can be tied in virtually any color combo to match your situation. This will be your new go to fly when you are in tough conditions and will produce fish when nothing else will for almost any species of fresh or saltwater fish.

Enjoy!!!

(Shad Version)

Hook: Mustad 34007 Size 10-4 (placed in vice inverted)

Thread: Gray

Eyes: Lead Eyes painted jet black and Tied on the underside of the shank, so that the hook will keel.

Body: A small Stack each 4-6 strands of krystal and Peacock flash tied about half way down the hook from the eye.

Underbody: Tie one stack of white rams wool in right in front of the lead eye on the bottom side of the hook and let trail back about twice the length of the shank. Make sure you do not cut the tag off of the wool yet.

Overbody: One Stack of Gray wool tied on the top side of the hook and let it trail back just slightly longer that underside.

Gills: Take a red pin and color the thread use to tie in krystal flash, making sure not to color your wool.

Head: You want to shape the head with scissors cutting the bottom first. The cut should be made with the entire clump of tag wool on bottom at a 45 degree angle down from the hook eye. Do the same with the top but, cut at a 45 degree angle up from the hook eye. Tie off and place zap a gap on thread making sure not to get any on the wool.
