From freestone
rivers, lush still waters, amazing tailwaters and some of the
most productive anadromus rivers to be found, the West Slope Of
the Sierra offers the most diverse fly fishing opportunities to be had anywhere.
Come with us on a journey into the best kept secret in
California fishing.... The West Slope of the Sierra.
Our Waters....
The Tuolumne
River System
Once you have had
the chance to experience the Tuolumne River, you will come to appreciate the hard work
that John Muir (Founder of the Sierra Club) did to protect the waters of this magnificent system.
The Main Tuolumne
River, holds the most diverse fishing in the Sierra . It's Head
waters host magnificent, hard to reach fisheries that produce
trophy rainbow, brown, brook,
and golden trout that rarely see an artificial presentation. From
there, the rivers flow through a series of Dams and becomes a
very complex system of tail waters. Below each of these
Dams, the river tends to change
drastically and each tail water section holds its own unique fishery
The main feeder
streams enter the Tuolumne at this point. Wonderful fisheries in their own right, the
Middle, and South forks of the Tuolumne, and the trophy trout
waters of Cherry creek, offer fly fisherman a lifetime worth of
water to explore.
After all of the
Dams and feeders influence the stream, the Main Fork of
the Tuolumne River Flows into
Don Pedro through a rugged canyon. This is the one of the most amazing sections of
river you will ever encounter, though well worth the work. Rainbows
and land locked steelhead are commonly landed in this section
in excess of 22 inches, and we produce fish up to 35 inches every
year.
The Lower Tuolumne
flows form the outlet of Don-Pedro reservoir. From there, it runs
nearly 100 uninterrupted miles into the Delta and then out to
Sea. Weather you are fishing for steelhead, salmon, stripers,
shad, or small, spotted or large mouth bass, this "Lower T" is one of the best
foothill Tailwaters in the State. While we do fish and there are
many miles of public water, Sierra West Adventures has secured
many private leases to access this amazing Tailwater. Whether
you are on private or public sections one can fish this wonderful
section usually little or no other angling pressure. Although
the Lower Tuolumne does take some time to reveal it's secrets
to anglers who have not visited
it's banks, it is rapidly becoming one of our clients favorite
stretches to fish.
The Stanislaus
Drainage
Beginning it's journey to
the sea in the from the high snow covered peaks of the Emigrant
Wilderness, the Stanislaus River begins it's journey out to sea.
It's waters are born from hundreds of feeder creeks, which feed
high elevation reservoirs. From those trout filed
creeks and amazing stilwaters, the mountain Tailwater sections
of the North, Middle and the South Fork of the "Stani"
begin. These sections, along with their many feeders, offer anglers
literally hundreds of wild brown, brook and rainbow trout waters
to explore. With some of the most prolific insect hatches
anywhere and very willing fish
feeding on them daily, there is never a dull moment in while fishing the Upper Stanislaus
Drainage.
'The Lower Section of the
Stanislaus flows from the outlet of New Melones Reservoir and
lake Tulloch. For it's size, the Lower "Stani", has
an incredible number of hard pulling Steelhead to offer visiting anglers. The California
Rivers Restoration Fund
has been hard at work in the Lower Stanislaus. They have restored
miles of this river by building and monitoring spawning habitat
for the steelhead and prolific runs of Chinook Salmon that visit
it's banks annually. In addition, it holds one of the finest inland
Striper runs anywhere. With many steelhead annually caught in
excess of 10 pounds
and and stripers landed in the 30 pound class, the Lower Stanislaus
river is a truly unique West Slope River.
The Merced
River
The mighty Merced River, which carved
the famous Yosemite Valley, truly is a pristine Native Trout fishery.
From It's head waters in the park, through the rugged Merced River Canyon, it offers
a chance to wet a line in one of California's last wild rivers.
The Lower sections
of the Merced Flows from the banks of McClure and McSwain Reservoirs.
From Here, the river holds a three mile private impoundment that
has a trophy brook, and rainbow fishery with fish landed to 10
pounds plus.
The Lower Merced
River is one of the finest trophy steelhead, small, large, spotted
and striped bass fisheries in the state. We have secured access
to many private sections of this river to offer our clientele
fishing opportunities with no outside angling pressure. The Lower
Merced produces some of the biggest trophy fish we land every
season and it has become a favorite of many of our clients to
explore.
With all
of these waters and diverse fishing opportunities available, the
West Slope of the Sierra truly has it all.
